North Carolina State Wolfpack Football History

The history of football at the North Carolina State is rich in tradition and talent. The NC State Wolfpack football represents North Carolina State University on the gridiron in Raleigh, North Carolina. They started playing football at the school in 1892 and have been in the ACC as a founding member since 1953. Prior to joining the ACC , the Wolfpack were a member of the Southern Conference. The North Carolina State Wolfpack football program has competed in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) since 1953. The Wolfpack have won seven conference championships (1951, 1957, 1960, 1963, 1965, 1973, 1979).

The Wolfpack's most successful era came under head coach Earle Edwards, who led the team from 1954 to 1970. During his tenure, Edwards led the Wolfpack to four conference championships and two bowl victories. Edwards' teams were known for their strong running game and their stout defense.

Other notable North Carolina State football coaches include Monte Kiffin (who led the Wolfpack to their first conference championship in 1951), Chuck Amato (who led the Wolfpack to two conference championships in 1973 and 1979), and Tom O'Brien (who led the Wolfpack to a conference championship in 2002 and a bowl victory in 2003).
